Technology is changing the way claims are handled. The Consumer Federation of America has put out a Consumer Alert! Do it Yourself Claims Handling. The alert advises that some of the do-it-yourself claim handling encouraged by insurance companies can be useful for small auto and home-owners claims, it does not replace the need for a qualified claims adjuster. It is important to advocate for a claims adjuster when you need one. The alert also mentions that you should be careful about any audio feature as any voice recording will be a permanent part of your claim file. Insurance regulations have not caught up with this new technology, so proceed with caution.
